3 Reasons Why You Need A Sister-Friend At Work

Should you make friends at work? Tons of research and one blogging sister-friend says absolutely!  You can Google the research yourself but I will save you some time and tell you that people who report having a good friend at work are often happier and more successful in the workplace.

The whole concept of bonding at work is one that many “power” sistahs used to warn me against. Their advice was always to keep to yourself, don’t let anybody know your personal business and to keep everything at a superficial level.  I can imagine that their advice was well intentioned and quite useful in a variety of situations. I tried to follow those rules but I couldn’t do it. It’s just really not my style. Yeah…as you can guess, I have been hurt by some women who I called friend but I hold no grudges. Desperate people do desperate things. I now understand that I have always been walking in God’s favor and what He has for me….is mine and no one else’s. Yep!

I’m happy to report that in almost every position I’ve held, I’ve always made one good friend. One whose friendship lasted longer than the job! I now have my own circle of sisters whose friendship, career guidance, mentorship and perspective have helped me to become the woman that I am.

As you know, work can get crazy at times  (re-read: Supervisor as Homegirl for more friendship strategies) yet I believe firmly that a sister-friend in the office is your:

Cheerleader: This person is always rooting for you even when others aren’t. One vote of confidence is often all we need to push through.

Thought Partner: Your sister-friend knows the company culture as well as you do and can be a tremendous help when trying to get ideas out of your head and into the world.

Comedic Relief: Yes! It feels good to get her to laugh and she returns the favor. Humor makes the day go faster and there’s nothing better than someone who laughs with you even when you wanna cry.

Stay Fly, Stay Fabulous and Rock On!
